What you can do until your appointment

If the emergency is caused by dental pain that has appeared suddenly, it could be anything from an infection to an abscess. The most you can usually do is to take over-the-counter pain killers, use a hot or cold compress outside the mouth to help with pain and swelling, and keep the area clean until we can see you in person in our practice.

If your cheeks or gums are bleeding from trauma such as taking a knock to the face, you need to sit down and apply pressure to the cut with a clean bandage for 10 minutes. If the wound does not stop bleeding, seek medical attention by dialling 000.

In case you lose a tooth

One of the worst dental emergencies involves an adult tooth being knocked out. The first thing to do is to find the tooth. Once you have it, only handle it by its crown – the white part that you would usually see above the gum line. If it’s dirty, give it a quick rinse off with milk or water only when milk is not available. If possible, replant the tooth in its socket as soon as possible, and hold it in place until you reach our practice. If that’s not an option, keep the tooth wet by keeping it inside your mouth or in milk (not water). You could also wrap it in cling wrap.
